"I came to Rory when I was nearing retirement after I was told by a friend who had attended Rory he was very good with arthritis. I was not looking forward to retirement because I was so stiff and sore all the time.. So I went to Rory for treatment and the rest is history. Well that was 15 years ago and I am still enjoying my retirement, playing golf, pitch and putt, traveling etc ! I can't thank Rory enough. I now go to Rory once a week for a general massage, it keeps me in shape and keeps the aches and pains at bay. Thanks Rory!

Massage : A Prescription for Stress

Massage therapy has been around for thousands of years. In both India and China, massage is an important part of the traditional medical care. It started to be used in Europe about 200 years ago, when a Swedish doctor felt it could be used to help healing by increasing blood flow to an injured area.

Today many of us are plagued with the disease of our time STRESS. Stress in itself is not always bad for us, however, there is a fine line between natural excitement and stress. For example, the natural excitement of watching the rugby this week end verses the tension felt from the loss of employment both effect the body, however, differently. Prolonged healthy tension can result in stress.

Stress can be one factor that impairs or threatens our health and can have a negative effect on the proper functioning of our systems. Some of the common illnesses directly related to stress include: high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, rheumatism, migraine headaches, backaches, acne, infertility, hormonal imbalances, reduced mental and physical activity and repressed immune function, all which may lead to infectious diseases. Our body and its systems can cope with the majority of what we put them through, but when an imbalance occurs, often due to an excess of stress, we are left unable to operate at our maximum potential. Sickness is the body's way of rebelling against neglect, imbalance and pollution.

If not controlled, stress can result in a vicious cycle of depression, insomnia, exhaustion, as well as. the possibility of the illnesses mentioned before. Often we deal with stress through avoidance behavior, excessive consumption of alcohol, excessive smoking, overeating and possibly prescription and other drug abuse.

The origins of therapeutic massage are rooted in the common instinctual response to erase pain through touch with pressure. Massage as a healing art is as old as civilization itself. It has been used for thousands of years for relaxation, restoring and promoting health. In some countries it is even a health discipline.
